NEW BERN COMMUNITY RESPITE CARE

Where neighbors are helping neighbors living with dementia

Coming in Spring 2025 -- a place for people living with dementia to connect with each other and volunteers in moments of joy while care partners are provided time to themselves. This social engagement program lifts up everyone’s strengths in a supportive, creative and purposeful way.

About New Bern Community Respite Care

New Bern Community Respite Care is a volunteer-powered respite program for people in the community living with dementia that brings hope, joy and connection to all involved. Thanks to community-wide involvement and administrative support provided by Centenary UMC, we are disrupting the isolation brought on by dementia by providing respite one half day per week.

Program activities center the strengths and assets of people living with dementia. Adding in the energy of the volunteers, a day at respite includes:

  • Small group conversations

  • Art, games, music, movement

  • Guest speakers

  • Group service projects

  • Shared lunch

While the person with dementia is at respite, the care partner is given the extra time to tend to other responsibilities or – just as important – to rest.

The respite program will be held in the fellowship hall at Trinity United Methodist Church (2311 Elizabeth Ave, New Bern, NC 28562) one day a week from 10 am - 2 pm. Start date to be announced.
