The Centenary Connexion - November 15

Pastor Tyler

The approach of the Holiday Season means that the liturgical year is winding down. We only have two Sundays left before Advent, which means that the assigned lectionary texts are getting apocalyptic. In this Sunday's reading from Mark's Gospel, Jesus foretells the destruction of the Temple and, in so doing, dispels the sense of permanence and grandeur it projected. The disciples' amazement at the impressive Temple quickly dissipated into concern about when exactly "all these things" might take place. Jesus disturbed the comfortable sense of permanence the Temple instilled.

Frankly, apocalyptic teachings disrupt and disturb us, too. We like Jesus better when he tells us to love our neighbor and teaches us how we should live than when he teaches about the end.

But with Jesus, there is always Good News. In the end, there is a beginning. And that hope is what we will celebrate this Sunday at 8:30, 9:00, and 11:00!
