The Good Son

One of the chief accusations that Jesus’ legalistic opponents made against him was that he “ate and drank with sinners.” In their way of thinking, sin was a moral infection, and anybody who hung out with sinners would inevitably become one himself. No forgiveness or compassion was extended to those who broke the Jewish law. A sinner either acknowledged their evil ways on their own and then made the appropriate sacrifices to atone for them, or they were left to their doom. Reaching out as Jesus did was condemned. It was dangerous. It set a bad example. It might encourage sinners to believe they were worthy and not inhuman beasts.

One of the stories Jesus told to illustrate God’s love for ALL people, including every kind of sinner, is now known as “The Parable of the Prodigal Son.” Conventional wisdom says the story is about a man who strayed far from morality. But is it? Join us Sunday in worship and discover who “The Good Son” is.
