The Centenary Connexion - March 14

Kathy Mitchell

The contemporary worship song “Reckless Love” has since become a favorite of our CENTyouth Praise Band, whose name, Leaves the 99, is inspired by that song and scripture. The moving refrain of the song goes like this:

Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God

Oh, it chases me down, fights 'til I'm found, leaves the ninety-nine

I couldn't earn it, and I don't deserve it, still, You give Yourself away

Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God

This week’s reading from Luke’s Gospel provides an example of the reckless love of Jesus. Despite realizing that going to Jerusalem means Jesus will confront death, he is determined to demonstrate that the love of God cannot be threatened, extinguished, or killed. Despite knowing the people of Jerusalem will reject him, he shares his desire to care for the city’s inhabitants like a mother hen cares for her brood.
