"... If any wish to come after me, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me."
These words land uncomfortably on many of our ears just as they landed uncomfortably for those who first heard Jesus speak these words two millennia ago. We like when Jesus says things like "Ask, and it shall be given to you," or when Paul wrote, "For I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
We all know God is not a fairy godmother who swoops in to grant us our wishes and get us on the path to Easy Street, but too often, we slip into the comfortable illusion that God is there to make our lives easier and satisfy our wants and needs. So, on this second Sunday of our Lenten journey, we are confronted with a passage from Mark's Gospel that reminds us that God calls us into a counter-cultural way of living that calls us to embody the same self-giving love that Jesus embodied as he lived, suffered, and died.
Join us for worship at 8:30, 9:00, or 11:00 on Sunday. And remember, during our 11:00 service, we will have special music provided by King's Cadence!
